Engine won't start
My Yamaha G16 runs great. but sometimes will not start. The engine turns over fine but it will not fire. It usually happens after I drive it a bit, then it will not start. If I wait 10-15 minutes she'll start back up.
Any clues for me to get this fixed. Thanks |

Re: Engine won't start
Maybe loose starter belt, battery charge or air filter issues. Some things to check.

Re: Engine won't start
My last cart did that, fired right up when cold but started having issues on warm restart then it got worse and cut off when running turned out the ignition coil was the issue.
An inline spark test tool made finding the problem pretty easy. |

Re: Engine won't start
If you have in fact verified no spark when it is spinning then it could be either the ignition module or coil heating up

Re: Engine won't start
This is bad coil. Also known as the TCI. The G16 does not have a separate ignition module.

Re: Engine won't start
After some further research I see the engine is getting spark. The plug was very dry when I removed it. So I think it is a gas issue. The fuel filter is pretty empty So I changed the fuel pump. But no difference. The vacuum line looks good going to fuel pump, but I can't get to the engine side of the vacuum line. It is underneath the air filter box. My next step is to try again to remove the air filter box so I can see the vacuum line.
Am I barking up the wrong tree? Should the fuel filter be full of gas, or at least the the hose height? |

Re: Engine won't start
Get a spray bottle with some fresh gas in it and spray it directly into the carb as you spin the engine. If it starts, you have confirmed your fuel issue. You might have to replace all the vacuum and fuel lines if they are old. Sometimes old rubber lines can have tiny cracks or gaps that leak vacuum and it won't push fuel.

Re: Engine won't start
Check the vent tube on your carb for being clogged or tank vent.
You say it runs for 10/15 minutes so you verified fuel pump is working. Could be time to pull the carb and give it a good cleaning |

Re: Engine won't start
UPDATE:
I swapped out the coil and it fixed my problem. Thanks for all the help! I tried a off market brand and wasted my time. The OEM coil went on easy and has worked flawlessly. |
