Unhappy 83 CC electric w/bad worm gear style steering

I recently acquired this cart with "a little" play in the wheel. I figured I'd just tighten up the adjustment screw a bit and live with it.

Nope. Even a micro-turn of the adjustment screw renders the steering useless and makes a grind/squeak sound that makes you cringe.

Local dealer says CC no longer supplies this style gear...I'm on my own.

I've seen the bearing kit for this unit...that's about it. Judging by how much play I see in the plate that rotates, my guess is that any sort of shaft/bushing combo inside is toast.

Are there any bearings in the steering column?

Anybody know of someone that keeps these around? I've Googled the holy ba-jeepers out of this and come up empty.

Crazy thought....how involved is it to convert this old girl to the steering system used on the 84's and up?

Thanks for any input....

Can you post some very good detailed pics of your steering assembly? Maybe wheels off?
