94 medalist battery question
I just picked up a 94 medalist series cart today. once i got it home and started taking a closer look at it i noticed somebody put 6 12v batterys in it! I have never seen this. I metered the battery voltage and its a strong 37. Its almost like its getting double 36v lol. Any input would be great.

Re: 94 medalist battery question
Sounds like some one wired 3 - 12v batteries in series to get 36 volts, and 3 more 12v batteries in series for another 36 volt pack , and then wired the 2 - 36 volt packs in parallel to get more amp hours. Are these car batteries or golf cart batteries? can you post some pics of this set up

Re: 94 medalist battery question
Six 12V deep cycle batteries connected in series/parallel will create a 36V pack in the 300AH range while six 6V batteries connected in series maxes out at
260AH. In other words, it is the highest storage capacity 36V battery pack that can be built from commonly available golf cart batteries and will increase the run-time of a stock 36V cart by about 33%. Six 12V deep cycle batteries can also be connected in series for a 72V drive system with similar range and much higher performance, but requires a 72V controller, solenoid and motor. However, if car batteries are being used, the range will probably be less than a standard (225AH) 36V pack. |

Re: 94 medalist battery question
The 12v GC batteries have a considerably larger footprint than 6v GC batteries.
Fitting six 12v GC batteries in the cart would take considerable modification. I suspect car batteries were used. Can the poster identify the batteries? |

Re: 94 medalist battery question
yeah i don't think these are a deep cycle battery. They don't say deep cycle on them anywhere. They are a sealed none serviceable battery.

Re: 94 medalist battery question
Looks okay - These are deep cycle AGM batteries - I can't see the model # really clear in the pic but go here for general info. > http://www.servicepoolen.com/pdf/12-1051.pdf
Your model's spec will differ... so search the net. Research and make sure you have a charger which is totally compatible with the needs of the AGM battery. P.S. What is the amp hour rating of those bad boys? |

Re: 94 medalist battery question
It appears to be a UPS12-320MRX. Datasheet attached.
84AH @ 20 hr rate, so that is a 168AH 36V pack, or about 75% the storage capacity of the standard 225AH 36V pack. Looks like someone had a source of used batteries from a data center battery back-up system. |

Re: 94 medalist battery question
I suspect they are different ages, or at least the labels have different amounts of fading.
Since two 845AH batteries are connected in parallel, they are effectively a 168AH battery, so the TC-III charger's output amps won't exceed a C/5 charge, but the shut-off voltage is too high. A TC-III typically shuts off in the 44-46 volt range and the max on charge voltage for an AGM type battery is 2.40VPC, or 43.2V for a 36V pack. |
