I see more than a couple of problems here, I would put that whole assembly in the trash can and start fresh... but lets see if the other person wants to help you fix it.

I've got a new one on the way just thought I'd take it off and take it apart to see how everything works

Yeah.........your current one looks like it's been "rode hard and put away wet" on more than one occasion. You really need to take a good look at your HD wires that are attached to your F\R switch. Your current switch looks like it's been heated up to a melting point on more than one occasion, and that being the case, usually the Heavy Wires that carry the high current to 'em will have heated up as well...possibly causing the connections to have toasted, and likely the wire coverings to have melted.

If you ordered one of Scotty's Heavy Duty F\R switches you probably will be Ok if you do a lot of street riding. But, if you do a lot of woods riding you really may want to consider going with one of his HD or SD Contactor Switches. These replace your current "old style" switches with a solonoid type of F\R switch and you PITA wrist busting lever with an easy to use one-finger F\R switch.

I put it back on and it worked fine. No signs of of post heating up they are nice and clean. I still have a new one coming. I rode it about 5 miles and nothing hot to the touch on the switch. Guess that's a good sign ?

Yes. If you went 5 miles (I'm assuming that's 5 non-stop...or pretty much non-stop...no half-hour layovers 'n such) and your F\R switch or the BIG wires on your F\R switch were not hot (and HOT is to the point where you can't touch 'em....you could cook up a hot dog , etc) then your probably good. But replacing the one you have in the picture is a good idea as it appears to be on it's last leg.
