Default 1986 DS, New Voltage Reducer, Key Switch.....

So thanks to the forum I found I wasn't losing my mind and my key switch IS connected to the negative side of the battery pack. OK, fine. So my voltage reducer has a positive wire that wants to be connected to the key switch. THAT ain't gonna work..

Would this work: I connect the positive side and one pole of a 12-60V relay to the positive side of the battery pack and the other pole to the key wire of my voltage reducer. I connect the negative side to the switched side of my cart's key switch. The key switch provides the negative side, and when switched on, connects the positive voltage to the key switch wire of my voltage reducer.

The ultimate goal is to have the main key switch turn on and off EVERYTHING. When the key is off, I don't want power to be connected to any accessory.

See any holes in this scenario?

SURELY someone has had this predicament with an older DS....

THANKS in advance!

It is easier to re-wire the cart for a positive key switch.
Disconnect the 2 wires from the key switch and splice them together.

Run 2 new wires from the key switch to the FNR switch.

Disconnect the positive wire from the FNR that goes to the pedal speed box (power to the micro-switches).

Connect one of the wires from the Key Switch to where that wire was connected.

This will be the "Hot Side" or the always ON side of the key switch.

Connect the other wire from the key-switch to the wire that goes to the speed box, that will be the "Cold Side" or the side of the Key Switch that only gets power when the switch is ON.

You can now wire any accessories: Voltmeter or Converter to your new positive key switch.

Use different color wires (or tape the ends of the wires with different colored tape) for easy identification.

Use the diagram below for reference:

Why in the world would they wire it up with a negative switch?!? The above seems more intuitive than a negative switch.

Just one concern as I haven't checked the specs yet. Is the original key switch robust enough to handle the extra juice going through it?

Regardless of the cart, You should only connect the converter "trigger wire" to the key switch.

If Your converter does not have a "trigger wire", You will need to use a relay or external switch to connect the converter power directly to the battery pack.

So I finally got to the Key Switch! I don't know why, but it was not something I could wrap my brain around....until I actually did it. I modified your great instructions a little and it hardly took any time to complete. Now EVERYTHING turns off when the key is off. Fantastic. THANK YOU for the help, Sergio!
