Club Car DS 1998 charging problem
We have a Club Car DS that when connected to charge, the charger sends in up to 60vdc to the batteries and does not shut down. Car has 50 volts and still gets charger activating without shutting off. We verified all the fuses in charging system. Opened the charger and verified if the OBC was sending the voltage reading to the relay board which it did (probed the two smaller posts connections when connecting the charger to the car and it automatically goes to 48.9 which is slightly lower than actual battery pack) What could be the cause? We tested another charger and it did the same thing.

Re: Club Car DS 1998 charging problem
Most likely the OBC has failed. The OBC controls charging and turns the charger off.
If the batteries are old or are in poor condition they will not charge correctly and the charge current may stay at a high level for a long period of time but the OBC should time out and turn off after 16 hours of continuous charge time. If it does not turn off at all, the OBC has failed. If that problem has been going on for some time, it may have severely overcharged the batteries and damaged them. |

Re: Club Car DS 1998 charging problem
That would be your OBC is failing. It controls the charger and its sequencing. That was verified when you pluged a separate charger in and got the same results. You can replace the OBC or get you a new smart charger like a Lester Summitt II, Delta-Q, or DPI.

Re: Club Car DS 1998 charging problem
That is what we were thinking but according to some troubleshooting, it said that if we got battery voltage from golf car on two smaller post cables at the relay, it meant that the OBC was communicating with charger and telling it the correct cycle to charge on. But this may be incorrect. Can you confirm this?

Yes, it's telling it to turn on, but the OBC controls the charger sequence. It tells it when to charge, how much to charge, and when to turn off.
You can try resetting the OBC just to see it if corrects it. |

Pull the Main pack Neg off, then put FNR in Rev, depress pedal till the buzzer dies, weight a couple of minutes and hook it back up.
