Default how hot is too hot on 6gauge cable?

J0041-946875 2000 year Series cart.White cable where it connects to Forward/Reverse lever-rotary switch.when climbing 8% grade for a minute or so cable is HOT to touch,almost burns skin..NO discoloration/burnt look on cable and connections are tight.I disassembled switch and all the copper high amperage contacts look good.thoughts?

Pretty much normal with the amperage it was carrying under load.

I once read that if you can't hold it for a count of 5 it is too hot

If that cable is looking a little aged, you may want to replace it. As they age, they get resistance inside where you can't see. If original, cable is 20 years old.Cables are cheap. Might even be a good time to go thru all of them and clean connections/replace.

keep in eye on the rotatory block on the F/R . if there is going to be a issue its going to be on that. I have seen the brass plug melt into the block far enough to stop making contact
