Will a 2pg run with piston installed backwards?
I always second guess myself, after dealing with a myriad of issues I would like to rule this possibility out.
Thought I had it all worked out and it ran good for a mile or two then it backfired and blew the diaphragm on the fuel pump Pretty sure this is a timing issue, can someone confirm: Advanced or retarded to blow the fuel pump? |

Re: Will a 2pg run with piston installed backwards?
Your throttle cable should be rigged with a spring on the end of it like the pictures. A missing spring is the most likely cause of a backfire.
The backfire could have blown the crankshaft seals too. There is very little adjustment on the timing. Did you let off the gas, and then step down again when it backfired? The spring makes sure that the throttle plate closes all the way, and doesn't let gas into the bottom end when coasting to a stop. |

I will double check my throttle (spring) to make sure it opens after ignition thanks.
How likely is it I blew the crank seal(s) and how can I check them? Thanks, Kevin |

Does it still run? If not, one of the seals has most likely blown.
A more likely scenario is that a ripped diaphragm was the cause of a backfire, and not the result. |

Re: Will a 2pg run with piston installed backwards?
Switched the red/blue pulser wires and it ran great but the timing appeared to be extremely advanced? Turns out I have been timing to the wrong mark on the cover after converting to HEI and running retarded. Ran it like this without knowing exactly where I was on timing and it ran good for a couple laps around the neighborhood until it backfired. Checked the fuel pump (which I had just rebuilt) and the new diaphragm was blown, I am convinced from the backfire.
Located TDC on the cover and was going to mark 17 degrees when I noticed a very faint line on the cover (the timing mark) at 17 degrees. So the line I was timing to has X's on it, what is it for? |
