Ah so it does regenerate. But apparently ineffectively. Shame... could be a great idea as thats used on the Toyota Prius fairly effectively. Probably on others too. But thats a sophisticated system.

Thanks Dave

True.... The regenerative braking of the Excel system is a little more effective simply because it utilizes motor braking a lot more often than the IQ system.

I happen to really like the Pedal up Regen brake on my Precedent Excell, it is way more effective than the mechanical brake.

I do agree that for most driving conditions, it does not add enough energy back to make a noticeable difference in the range.

In my particular case I drive around a lot of small hills and it is kind of cool seeing my pack voltmeter climb up to +60v when I am slowing down.

I expect those quick high current charging jolts are also good for the pack as well.

Yep. The Excel car can provide regenerative braking all the way down to 1 or 2 mph. The IQ doesn't provide the feature at anything below 8-10 mph if my memory serves me correctly.

The IQ Regen brake was a simple generator and if the motor was not spinning fast enough, I think the range you said is about right, the motor could not generate a voltage high enough the charge the batteries.

Below that 8-10 mph it was a plain dynamic brake and the energy was wasted as heat by the controller.

I really like the technical trick the Excell controller does (pulsing the armature into a short to excite the flux) to keep the Motor developing that high energy almost to 0mph.
