Its really strange and odd.. I did mark all the gears and checked for proper alignment before final assy.If I remember correctly there was a hole in the balancer that lined up with a dash mark on the crank. I painted all marks when I pulled the eng. apart.
If the balancer was off would I have excessive eng vibration ?
Not neccessarily. I have heard from repuyable sources here that they even run OK without them! It is possibble that rhey wee not put in correcrly from a previous rebuild, but it still sounds like the problem...

I do believe I read that factory put a inkstamp or mark that sometimes goes away on the balance shaft gear. If so how do you find the proper location?
There is an old thread here somewhere that explains the procedure, it's stilla little touchy/ feely though. I'll see if I canfind it....

Keep in mind, I can hear & feel this tap type noise sounds like metal/metal while rolling crank back & forth at certain areas of complete revolution. Thanks & let me know if ya think of something. I really hate to pull it apart again, but....

I know where your comeing from. The mark on the crank and cam are easy "markings". The mark on the crank for the balancer is so bad we do it buy experiance. Here we go.... When you have your cam alighned with the crank....You will need to "back off" the crank to install the balancer. When balancer installed rotate the crank back to the cam alignment marks. You should find the cam-crank-balacer marks make a "V". You may need to back off the crank and reset the balancer buy a tooth (or two) and repeat. I'm going to try to attatch a picture. Good luck dave

I'm not saying that is for sure your problem, but again it has all the symptoms you describe. Been there and done that!

Could it be a wrist pin moving back and forth in the larger piston?
I've never had one of these apart, so I'm just shooting wild.

Well I marked inspected and reinstalled the oil slinger in the orientaion called out in the manual, did not appear bent or twisted . Its pretty straightforward inside the crankcase. I do remember reading the posts regarding having to roll back the crank to allow the balancer to install properly which I did. All seemed to be in good alignment after installing. Double checked and the case half slid on no problem. I guess I will pull it apart and try to figure this one out on the bench,,,,, Thanks to everyone I will keep you posted

I've never had one of these apart either but here is my two cents.

The old VW air-cooled engines would knock if you put the rods in backwards. Just a thought....

I have a engine vibration problem on a yamaha G2. The crank ink mark is not visible on the balancer side, so I have no way of knowing if the balancer is aligned properly. With the cam/crank marks aligned, I have the balancer mark in line with the crank. Can someone send me a picture of the alignment so I can count the crank teeth for alignment?

And As Always Guys Thank You for the input, Well I pulled it apart & benched the engine. I found balancer alignment good & right where it should be, slinger ok , oh and drive clutch has a minor amount of bushing play but not bad at all, also checked internal brgs again, Still nothing real obvious. Pulled the con-Rod and found really strang brg. wear and high & low spots in the brg shell.....Re=plastic-gauged it and mic'd the crank again. checked it for defects etc...The only thing I do see is this checked & railroaded connecting rod brg.. I am still really unsure the old brg looked ok worn evenly but worn... as in not a bent rod or cap. They both look ok even now in proper orientation and right side of pin etc... I am leaning towards this funky brg ... ?? I have ordered another and I guess we'll see..updates as I fix it.....
