The conditioning stage of charging, also called equalizing, is simply overcharging which is causing your batteries to boil and the end result is the loss of plate material.
IMO conditioning only needs to happen anywhere from monthly to twice a year, depending on your hydrometer readings.
If your charger has no other conditioning option than 2, 4 or 6 hours, I would select 2 and the life expectancy of your batteries will be extended.

Yes they are designed to maintain the pack at 100% charge.
