Cart goes fast then stuck in slow
Hi all, I have just purchased my first buggy, it's a Chinese buggy based on an ezgo from what I can tell. Not the finest specimen of a golf buggy but all I can afford and want to do it up as a project with the kids.
The chap I bought it off replaced the batteries before I collected and when I got it it went normal speed for the first few seconds then went into a slow walk mode. Whilst going slow it will still climb hills etc but only at the count at slow speed. If i turn it into tow mode and back to run, it replicates the fault (fast then slow). Everything else works fine. I have cleaned and tightened the terminals on every battery, I have tested each battery individually and they all read 12v. It is a 48v buggy One other stand thing is I can hear a noise from the front of the buggy when it is in run mode, regardless of ignition switch, the only time the noise goes off is when the buggy is in tow, or when in run when ignition is off and reverse is selected, very strange. I can't identify the buggy. It have photos on the key bits and a video below if it will ,et me post. Any help very much appreciated please. Thanks |

Re: Cart goes fast then stuck in slow
That acts like a speed sensor issue but can't tell from the pictures if it has one or what type of drive the cart is. I believe it is a sepex drive but that is a guest. Look on the end of the motor and see if there are any wires going to the center. If so, trace those back to the controller and make sure they are in good condition.

Re: Cart goes fast then stuck in slow
Hey KGSC,
Thanks so much for the help, I set to it this weekend, removed, refitted and cleaned the speed controller as well as checking the connections to the controller, all to no avail. Whilst digging to check the controller, I removed the solenoid setup off the top and revealed a serial number as well as a flashing fault code. The controller is a Curtis 1266 and the fault code relates to the following 2,1 LOW BATTERY VOLTAGE Low battery voltage. 1. Battery voltage < undervoltage cutback threshold. 2. Corroded battery terminal. 3. Loose battery or controller terminal. I had previously checked and tightened all the terminals, does anybody have an advice on cleaning the terminals (the batteries are brand new) or the cables used to attach them? The guy I bought it off had just put new batteries on before i got it, I have a sneaking suspicion that he put the cheapest ones he could find, and this may be my problem. I have put a pic of the battery below, I have 4 of them and they are brand new. As i said they are all reading 12v individually when disconnected. The batteries are 12v 41AH 360 (EN) The controller is 36-48v current 275a it is a 1266-5201 Please can anybody help with the battery spec I need please. thanks for all the help. Cheers Ben |

Re: Cart goes fast then stuck in slow
41 amp hours sounds way low. Any other numbers on those batteries?

Re: Cart goes fast then stuck in slow
Hey thanks for the response.
They are Numax s063 batteries. I googled them and found the following Voltage 12 Volts Technology Wet Capacity (C20) 41 Ah CCA (EN) 390 A Length 210 mm Width 175 mm Height inc. terms 175 mm Guarantee 3 Years Customer Rating Customer Rating How any amps do I need, it is 70 per battery? Cheers |

Re: Cart goes fast then stuck in slow
So check battery voltage first under a load and make sure the batteries are installed correctly. That car I don't think originally came with 4 12 volts.
Speed sensor and then the solenoid can also be at fault, however, it should throw a code for that. If he converted it to 4 12 volts in an effort to be cheap, then he may have hooked the wires up wrong and thus the cart is seeing low voltage |

Re: Cart goes fast then stuck in slow
Those are car batteries, not golf cart batteries.

Re: Cart goes fast then stuck in slow
Hey, thanks for the advice, how do I check the batteries under load, I have a 12v dc battery checker but I guess when combined it would be a 48v.
To check under load I guess I jack up the back wheeels and run it. Sorry for the painfully obvious questions, I am a novice (no kidding) Cheers Ben |
