Relax guys, I can help!

Ron, you have a controller cart. Technically, it is a 2000 36v Series/Fleet Electric TXT. It has a standard 275 amp Curtis 1206 controller. It is easily upgradeable in stages. First decide what you want the cart to do, then we can talk real $$$.

Thanks, identifying my carts drive system was my first goal. This cart is bone stock as of purchase. My immediate plans include a lift and larger tires beside some other cosmetic/audio upgrades. Probably just one of common 5" lift/tire combo packages available. This cart will spend the majority of its time toodling around my place, doing odd jobs or serving as a mobile mini bar (haha). However, it will see some time at the course and once I get all the necessary specs I will be taking it to the beach and cruising the local beachtown (they have a lot of carts buzzing around there).

I would like some extra speed but I did buy a small trailer to pull behind and would like torque. From everything Ive read you give up one for the other. Unless, if Im not mistaken, you go with a speed motor. I was all for this until I read about adding more juice for more power. Seems like a simple upgrade but probably more feasible to do once Im ready for new batteries. I wont have room to add batteries on the back. Ive already added a marine battery under the seat for the audio and headlights.

All things considered it seems I will need new batteries, wiring, controller, soleniod and 48v charger to get this all done. That's an expensive shopping list when added to my current short term goals.

I am curious about "upgrading in stages" as you mentioned. I hate watching my father in law blast past me on his gasser. Im sure Ill be even slower once its lifted and worried about what my battery life will be like once the additional drag is added. I noticed my sales receipt mentioned the batteries discharged at 80 minutes. Will I see a big drop in that if I stay stock?

Thanks

Cool Re: Upgrading for Speed II

Well, thers no such thing as losing torque on these things... Electric motors are direct drive, therefore they have HUGE amounts of torque... A guy pulled his truck with a stock golf cart, you don't need a "high torque" motor, you got one... If you get a faster motor, you may not be able to pull a truck, but a trailer for these things is a breeze!!!

A marine battery for your stereo? thats a good idea, how do you charge it, a seperate charger right? where exactly did you put it???

It fit perfect under the seat on the driver side. I haven't connected anything to it yet. Im still debating how exactly Im gonna mount the stereo. I have two ideas for charging. I saw a auto charger that can be mounted under the seat directly to the wood and is about the size of a box of matches. Im also thinking about a solar trickle charge I saw at Bass Pro for $32.00. That way I can charge it while I go down the road or if we are the beach, places with no electricity. Wish I could make that work for the cart too. Would be awesome to have it charge while its parked. In the mean time Ill just use a regular charger once I get the accessories hooked up.

Ron,

My cart started as a '97 Series/Fleet bone stock cart. My first upgrade was 4g welding cable ($100). Saw a small bump in performance as my stock cables were pretty crappy. Next I installed an Alltrax 4844 AXE 400a programmable controller that was 48v capable on my still stock 36v pack ($200, bought used from a forum member who was upgrading to 700a). Nice bump in torque, no speed change, but I could haul logs out of the woods! My third stage was adding the 2 extra 6v GC batteries to get to 48v ($200 for 2 batteries and a 12v smart charger), controller was rated for it and the stock motor handles 48v REALLY WELL. I'm getting 22mph on low profile street tires. I have stripped a drive hub allready, so the torque is still there! This was done over the course of 3 summers.

Hope this helps.

hey gorno, i noticed you said you have a stripped hub, ive run into these problems before on stock golf carts...mostly from little kids getting in it and going in reverse and then putting it in forward and hitting the gas before the car has stopped rolling backwards. anyways, i was just wondering what do the guys do that have the torque motors that offroad and stuff, how do they keep from stripping hubs?

You tighten that castle nut to 125 lb ft of torque. And if the cotter pin don't line up, you tighten it more till it does.
