Default 2004 club car barely makes hills

Good afternoon all, I recently bought a big wheel 2004 club car, the guy put 4 new 12 volt batteries in it. When I brought it to the campground the golf cart would barely climb a hill and even on slight inclines you felt it losing power, I brought it to Mts associates an ergo dealer and service center. They told me the batteries were wrong. So at there recommendation they put in 6-8volt Trojan batteries. I asked how it was running and they said better. I got to campground this weekend and guess what same exact thing no power climbing any kind of incline. My cousin seems to think motor???

I am at a lost here as it really seems no one has an answer even when I brought to dealer which I really don't want to bring back there since they told me batteries and obviously they were wrong.

Any help would be appreciated

Thanks

Jim

Welcome to BGW!!

Have you checked the voltage of the batteries? Can you push the cart by hand, (brakes could be dragging). Have the batteries been fully charged?

I can tell you 4 12s and 6 8s comes up to the same 48 volts, they seemed to of sold you two sets of new batteries. Possible you have a bad speed sensor and the cart is in limp mode, try this test.

On the flats the cart goes very well, I have been looking through some posts I am wondering if changing to a 400 AMP controller would be the fix. What else would need to be changed if I went this route. I found an Alltrax for 299.00 brand new online

thoughts and thank you all

I have 6 new 8 volt Trojan batteries, 4 gauge wires, a DCX 500 controller in my cart and still the cart slows when pulling up a hill My next upgrade will be a higher HP motor to help keep the rpm's up on hills

Your cart will slow down but should not creep on hills if you are getting a good control signal and power to your controller and motor

Look at the Stickies posted at top of page to help eliminate any mechanical or electrical issues Then if you still need help, post your cart serial # along with your findings, you will find great support from very knowledgeable people

Jim FYI, I was having power loss on hills between home and golf course as well as erratic acceleration and hard jumping action at start for forward and reverse

I ordered a MCOR II to 4 conversion from Revolution Golf, at Davids recommendation, and installed yesterday, and what a difference

Smooth starts now forward and reverse, smooth acceleration with immediate response to throttle position, slight speed change going up hills and achieved 22.9 mph on GPS

Amazing how well the Alltrax controller works when it gets a proper control signal

SCOTTYB, Where would be the best place to purchase a 400A COntroller or should I go with a 500A to be safe, Also Solenoid and should I do a 2G wire kit. Also how do I make sure I am getting the correct one. I was on ddmotorsystems.com site and looks like there are a ton of different models, I know mine is a 2004 and believe since it has the tow/run under seat it is a regen series.

Thanks for any advice you can give me.

BTW DD wants to sell me the whole thing with motor but I think I would rather try the first three things Controller, Solenoid and wire

Thanks,

Jim

Jim you need to find the problem before you do anything else. Replacing expensive parts without knowing what is wrong is just going to cost you money. There are only a few possible problems that can cause those symptoms. I assume you have an 04 Precedent based on your description and the 4x12 setup. The older precedents used the 4x12 setup though they have moved away from it in recent years. The difference in the two setups is minimal, and if the 4 12's were new then they screwed you on a set of batteries. The most common two problems to cause what you describe are a failed speed sensor or a soon to fail MCOR. The MCOR is located under the floor attached to the gas pedal, the speed sensor is on the passenger side of the motor. The speed sensor can be bought for less than $60, the MCOR less than $200. Also, if you do the speed sensor check the condition of the magnet that is mounted under it. Make sure it isn't cracked or chipped as that can cause bad signals and give poor performance. Once you have eliminated the basic potential issues, you can then move on to the expensive possibilities

How big are your tires? Big tires on a stock cart reduces torque. Torque is needed to get up hills. If you can hang around for a while, the guys here will definitely get you on the right track. I would suggest giving ScottyB a call. He is a member here and a site sponsor, carts unlimited, cartsunlimited.net. Good luck
