Default 97 g16 off and on power surge

Hello everyone new to the group, I have a 1997 yamaha g16e golf cart, i bought from grandpa, when i first got it i could drive for about 1 hour and the cart would just loose power, after waiting about a minute i would press the gas pedal and it takes right off again with full power, i have since changed batteries, solenoid and bigger cables on batteries, along with lift kit and bigger tires, it now will drive for about 20 minutes and do the same thing, after a minute it will start up again and go fine, then shut down after about 3 minutes on and on, im thinking it might be the controller ? any kind of help would be greatly appreciated, and maybe a place that sells new or remanufactured controllers.

Hi all,

I'm new to the site. A lot of good info.

I too am having similiar problems with my 1999 G19E 48V.
I was suspecting a bad battery, haven't done a load
test yet, but will soon. Would the controller cause these
symptoms.

Thanks, Chip

Guy's ,I feel for you. Unfortunatly you guy's don't have "readable" controllers. You can't find 'faults in the system with help from a "reader". There are so many posabilities. My Recomdation would to have the battery pack (set) "downloaded" with a "download machine", not everyone has them. They will tell you "minutes of download time" and when done they can "turn the "downloader back on" (before surface voltage comes back) and test individual batteries to find a bad one. Could be batteries or one or a computer or potentiometer or even the motor! Hope this helps alittle. Later dave

Well, I charged the batteries and did a load test on them and they all check out good, according to the load tester. It's strange, the cart runs really good for
about 15 minutes after a full charge, then the power just drops off to a crawl.
Could the batteries still have a problem, even if they check out good with the
load tester? I jacked the cart up held the throttle wide open and put the volt
meter across the batteries and it maintained 47 volts, then I pressed on the
brake with the throttle wide open the volts dropped into the 30's (is this normal)?

Thanks, Chip

Chip, you can't test deep cycle batteries with a 12 volt battery tester. Your best test was useing your volt meter and pressing on the brake. It tells me you have a bad (or 1 or more) battery set. A good golf car shop should charge you 30.00 or so to "download" your battery set (if fully charged to start) and would give you a price on a new set. Remember...if you put a new battery in with a old set.....after a few charge cycles....it will be as bad as the old one's....be carefull how you spend your money. Good luck Dave

Thanks Dave. I'm not sure how old the batteries are, but they are Trojans and
most likely they are 5+ years old I guess I will bite the bullet and go battery shopping. Thank again for the feed back.
