california street legal with a plate??
ok so i have noticed a few carts around town with cali plates on them. some are all lifted and everything. I have a 89 g-2 and i think that might be kind of cool to do also. Has anyone been to dmv to try to do this? Do they just frown on it or is it easy to get done wth the proper equipment? any info would help greatly.-Nick

Re: california street legal with a plate??
Not sure about CA but here in TN can't license them to my knowledge. I would say call the DMV for more info in your area. I'm sure the cart would have to be street legal: lights, blinkers, windsheild wipers, etc... With gas prices the way they are, this would definitely be a plus if you could use it to run back and forth to nearby stores: grocery shopping/whatever. And it would be pretty cool to get to drive your cart around town.

Re: california street legal with a plate??
There is such a "gray area" about the legal aspects to using a Golf Cart.I've been all over the USA an I am currently in Issaquah Washington.I use mine to run closeby errands...like the grocery or the local shops.I have seen many different law inforcement officers...both state an city.Even County. All they have ever done is wave at me and smile.I have a large reflector triangle attached to the rear ..I was told that qualifys you as a SMV(slow moving vehicle)...like those battery powered chairs disabled ride. The general info is...
1.You can't running more than 25mph. 2. You can only run on streets with a speed limit not to exceed 35mph. 3.You need no licence plate or headlites...no wipers, turn signals or such. 4.you can only ride during daylite hours. For the above...you need no plates or insurance. You CAN actually get a licence plate Info to licence your cart for road use... Must have bill of sale or certificate of origion. Take to local DMV to apply for plates...(10.00) You need liability insurance must have form or documentation as SMV(do a google for where to get one.) This applys in most states.Problem is ...no one seems to know about it. |

Just after some short searches..

If you have any additional questions please do not hesitate to contact me. Street legal, for a golf cart in Florida, means it can only be driven where the speed limit is 25 mph or less. http://www.flsenate.gov/Statutes/index.cfm?App_mode=Display_Statute&Search_String=& URL=Ch0316/SEC212.HTM&Title=->2007->Ch0316->Section%20212#0316.212 http://www.tennessee.gov/revenue/for...haffidavit.pdf With the soaring gas prices...I don't think any law inforcement agency would fault anyone for using their Cart responcibly |
