Default secondary clutch sheave

took the belt off tonight to replace with new one noticed there is a large "step" about half way down on the inner sheave. If this normal or is it worn used to snowmobile clutches that are smooth all the way down.

Have to see it but, yes, very worn. Probably close to having holes (windows) in sheave.

The step is most likley years and years of where the governor kicks in for max speed. Thats as far as the belt travels in the sheeves when driving along 90% of the time

I say nay. Not normal for the clutch to be "1/2 way" while driving on the governor limit (should be "full engaged"). You have problems for sure. Likely need both clutches repaired (and a new belt). Extended use with a worn belt and/or clutch problems caused the wear you see now. It will never work right, and will eat belts, if you continue using it this way (not to mention the "windows" in the metal. Heres a pic of what sometimes happens when they do wear too thin. (ok, i'll admit this was a popular "cut sheave & super heavy spring" in this pic, but i have seen the same result from "worn-through" clutches).

Dbmachines theory makes sense iv deleted the governor and on long wide open pulls it will make a sudden jerk and speed up assuming it is jumping the "step" feels like a two speed when it does it

It looks like both sheaves have a groove worn in them. It could just be the picture.

Dang it thats bad. Its gonna wear through before too long. My first yamaha g29 cart i owned was a 2010 g29 that was a fleet cart that the dealer lifted and added the tires and seat etc. the secondary clutch on it was almost the same way. It had the deep grooves in it as well but it was higher up on the sheeve than yours. If you put the cart in neutral and hold the pedal wide open you could look at the belt where it stopped and could see the ears and years the riding in this spot continuously at the factory governored speed. What i really think makes the grooving happen faster is when the belt gets worn down beyond the specified width. I put a cpp kevlar belt on that cart and the belt would go up higher on the sheeve up past the area where the groove was. The oem belt that was probably 4 years old was alot narrower than the new kevlar belt from cpp. It was worn out.

Steel fixed sheave is probably bent now too. Dont pry on it. Aluminum version of fixed sheave is all thats available now, and it aint cheap from yamaha.
