1980 ezgo conversion help!!!
My friend was given a 1980ish Gas EZGO. He wants to change it from a points to electronic or pointless system. Is there a conversion for this? If so, where can I get it? Also need a belt, fuel pump, carburetor. Can anybody point me towards any specific place to get these. Thank you in advance.

Re: 1980 ezgo conversion help!!!
I believe they did away with the points in 81, which i believe was also the year they introduced the internally mounted pulsar coil. Not 100% positive on that though. Ive ordered a lot of parts from Everything Carts (site sponsor) as well as Blockbuster. Blockbuster had good prices, but had higher shipping/handling costs. Does the cart still have the ID stamped on it somewhere? Or does your friend know the specific year?

Welcome BA go to the sticky at the top of the gas forums and click on 3pg hei install and you'll get the general low down. Follow the info and you'll be good to go.

Re: 1980 ezgo conversion help!!!
If your friend's cart has points then it is from the 70's (the electronic ignition was introduced in 1980). In 1980 Robin changed the design of the crankshaft and it is not compatible with the pre 1980 engine. I am not saying it can't be done but you would have to remove the points hardware and drill the crankcase to mount the pulsar ring. You would then need to source a flywheel from the 80's which has the two magnetic bars to trigger the pulsar and I don't think that anyone would be able to tell you if the outer diameter of the crankshaft will accept the flywheel. I have seen a diagram of how to use the HEI modification in conjunction with the points but this doesn't answer your question.
Any of the forum sponsors here can supply the parts you need, alternatively you can just Google 2PG fuel pump etc. Dave |

Re: 1980 ezgo conversion help!!!
Dave the post said 80 esh so I thought we were talking pulsar or breaker less ign. So now if we are talking a points conversion to HEI I have done it. I was the one that posted it a long while back and it does work with any points system using the points only as a ground therefore the points in effect will last forever as long as the block on the points are lubed to prevent ware. Just an up date

Re: 1980 ezgo conversion help!!!
Look online,There is a unit call Atom Mini-Tron.We used them in the early 80s',they are still availiable. We put them on points-style Briggs motors,it eliminates the points, and fires the coil(don't know exactly how,but it works!).

Racin, you did post an article back in January and we had a conversation about it. Here is a link to that thread and the pdf which is great reading.
