WELCOME Harold First start by checking all the grounds from battery to the frame and battery/frame to the engine remove them and clean them good. Now does the solenoid click each time the pedal is depressed? If yes I believe your problem is brushes in the s/g. I had the same problem. Step on the pedal and nothing and press on the pedal wait for 30 seconds then it would turn over LAZY. Replaced the brushes and BINGO. My thought maybe others have a different opinion but that's where I'd look.

If its a 76 it has an internal starter and wouldn't have a 295 robins. It would have a 244 robins.

Sounds like a bad-spot in either the windings or the flywheel-pickups for the Internal-Starter/Gen.Usually when a starter/gen doesn't spin, unless you turn it a bit,it has a bad spot in the armature.I haven't done alot with the internal setups, but its' a different variation of the external-system in theory and function.Hope this helps.

I too think its bad brushes. Hopefully the holders didnt get into the armature. They dont make the internal starter parts anymore.
