48V Carryall Stopped In Middle Of The Road
Was taking my 48V Carryall to get the mail this morning and it suddenly shuddered to an abrupt stop. Batteries/connections are fine and fully charged. When fiddleing with the f/r lever, it will *slightly* lurch to seem to want to go then nothing. Where do I start looking? Thanks in advance!

Re: 48V Carryall Stopped In Middle Of The Road
Is it a series cart? sounds like the Fwd/Rev switch is going to be your problem, micro switches or contacts someone else might have the four one one on that though,...

Re: 48V Carryall Stopped In Middle Of The Road
It's a 2000 48V Turf 1 Carryall....forgot to mention that......is there any way to 'jump' the f/r switch just to test it?

Re: 48V Carryall Stopped In Middle Of The Road
Quick follow-up...after checking all the connections on the f/r switch, I checked the micros and they seem to be working. When put in fwd, the micro clicks and the cart wants to go fwd then nothing. This is telling me the micros are OK, correct? Now my suspicion is with the solenoid-there is NO click or sound at all coming from it. Is there any test to check this? TIA

Locate the solenoid. Locate the two small posts of the solenoid. The negative small post will have a yellow wire attached to it. Run a temporary jumper from here to the B- post of the controller or main NEGATIVE battery post. If vehicle runs with jumper in place, replace the onboard computer.

Re: 48V Carryall Stopped In Middle Of The Road
Alright here is another follow-up...I jumped the solenoid...tiny lug on it jumped to the master negative on the battery pack. turned key on, depressed pedal. Nothing. Well, actually *slight* movement from the wheels, maybe 1/3 of a revolution. That happened before, so nothing's changed. This confirms the OBC is working correctly. right? Had a helper press down on the pedal while I felt the solenoid. No click, no sound-absolutely nothing from it. The resister got very hot, though. So I guess I should focus on getting a new solenoid, right? Is there any chance this can be the wiper switch?

Re: 48V Carryall Stopped In Middle Of The Road
You need to make sure the solenoid is getting the correct voltage to the coil (activation) posts. Since it's not clicking, it means that the solenoid is either not getting the correct control voltage or it is bad. Check for voltage across the two small posts with a multimeter. You should see full battery voltage when the car is on, in forward or reverse, and pedal is depressed. If you see voltage and the solenoid won't click, the solenoid is bad. If you don't see voltage you've got to figure out why. We've already ruled out a break in the negative circuit by manually bypassing the OBC-Solenoid lockout circuit. In this case, the problem would be in the positive side of the activation circuit. The circuit runs from B+ on the solenoid to the keyswitch, from the keyswitch to the throttle device micro switch (Probably a V-Glide on this model), to the forward most micro switch behind the F&R switch, and back to the positive solenoid coil post. You need to check the key switch and both of the micro switches I referred to and you'll figure out why you aren't getting a click. As for the pre-charge resistor getting hot. It indicates a bad controller 99% of the time, the other 1% of the time it's a shorted motor. It is not a symptom of a bad solenoid. In this situation, the controller is constantly drawing power why the vehicle is sitting still. Because the solenoid is open and there is no internal connection, the power passes through the resistor and heats it up. You may have a short in the controller. This is totally irrelevant to the solenoid not clicking. We're dealing with two totally separate circuits.

Re: 48V Carryall Stopped In Middle Of The Road
Thanks David.....OK, I did exactly what you said: key on-check, put in forward-check, (rear wheels off the ground & front end chocked), had helper completely depress 'GO' pedal-check, placed meter probes across the 2 small lugs on solenoid while depressed, check-51.9 voltage measured at posts. NO CLICK at solenoid.
So not to sound like a dope, but this means a bad solenoid as you've stated, right? |
