Default Fe290 ??

I'm looking at a 2006 DS Club Car at a pretty good price. I was told it has an FE290 11Hp engine but from my research I have found that it came stock with a 9HP. I know that someone could have replaced the original engine but I was wondering what years were the FE290's manufactured. I have driven the cart and it seems pretty slow for a 11Hp. Any ideas ?

FE290 is 9HP and should be the standard engine in the DS. (Fairtax or someone may be able to confirm if the DS was ever offered with a FE350, but I don't think so)

FE350 is the 11hp engine, that came in the carryall models.

I believe most (or maybe all) precedents came with the FE350 but I can't say for sure, someone else may be able to confirm.

Regardless...

Both the FE290 and FE350 are great engines. Quiet, strong, and dead reliable if maintained even half decently. If it is slow, there are plenty of adjustments that can bring the speed up. From what I've read most guys with DS and 290's can run in the upper teen's mph. Clutch condition, belt condition, etc will have a huge impact on performance. Probably more impact than the engine itself.

You won't notice much of a speed difference between the 350 and 290. Biggest difference between the two will be torque.

I had a John deere gator with the FE290 9hp engine, it would run around 20mph, and was HUGE compared to a golf cart, easily would have to be 300+ lbs heavier (and even more when I had the bed full of stuff).

Welcome to BGW!

CP's on the money!

although, the 2004/05 Precedents had FE290's, and my 07 Lynx (a factory modified DS for hunting) came with an FE350, which is kinda rare.

The next time you get a peek at it, check out the barcode tag on the engine shroud, it'll tell you what engine it is!

Thanks CP241...The guy with the cart I'm looking at said it's a FE290...351cc...11HP. Looks like smoke going up somebody's chimney.

Hey Lockman1...thanks for the info. I'm going to look at it again later today and I'm going to look for that tag.

I’m not sure if a regular DS ever came with a 350. Majority of them should have come with a 290. There are a lot of different versions built on the DS frame though, so it could be a sub model that came with a 350, or it could have been swapped. Either way, doesn’t really matter.

Slow could be a lot of things. Factory set I think they’re governed to like 12 or 14mph.
With the governor set right a 290 can run well over 20mph with bigger tires, and still have plenty of torque to climb hills or even run through ditches and rough off-road stuff for hunting, etc. Torque is in the clutches, speed comes from RPM.

In the end you’re better off with the 290, because the 350s have some internal issues that will cost big $$$$ when it fails.
