More G1 ????
Ok, one of you more experienced G1 mechanics, why in the world would anybody tack weld the bearing housing (probably bad nomenclature on my part) to the axle shaft? And if it's necessary, should I tack weld the other axle housing?
Just took the axles out to get at the brake shoes to do my brake job and noticed this difference. It's probably not hurting anything, but I like to know so I might anticipate further issues where things have been modified. Thanks for the input ... Ogre |

Re: More G1 ????
If it helps any with the question ... this was the drivers side ONLY. Isn't that the drive wheel (no posi)?

Do you have a picture of the other axle?

Re: More G1 ????
Does that sleeve go through the bearing? If so they may have put that on there to repair the axle and fit a larger internal size bearing to it. Otherwise I'd say the axle will not slide out that way.

Re: More G1 ????
It either looks like a speedy sleeve or is there to hold the bearing in place.

Re: More G1 ????
Whoops, I put it all back together already, Bob. I can get pics later this week, since I need another tool to complete the brake job.
I can tell you that there are no tack welded spots at all on it, but I'll get some shots up this week. Quote:

Re: More G1 ????
It also looks like a factory weld. Don't have an answer, since the other side also has a sleeve. Normally I would think it would be there so the sleeve would not turn on the axle.

At first glance, I thought it might not have gotten deep enough penetration into the hardened axle, but I'll take a closer look, and post some better close-ups when I pull them to finish my brake job. Ogre |

Re: More G1 ????
I wonder if the axle O.D. was off,so the bearing was too loose for a proper press-fit,so they tacked the collar to help it stay in place?
