Default G-1 hows the reverse work?

On my G-1, I know the reverse is done by starting the engine backwards.
My question is more how and why? Is there something special about this engine?

Welcome to BGW!

It's a 2 stroke engine that are able to run clockwise and counter clockwise. It was less expensive to have the engine run backwards for reverse than to have a trans-axle with a reverse gear.

thanx... I understand cost effective, but anyone know what enables it to run clock or counter clockwise? I'm kinda asking cuz a Bravo engine was brought up but I have a '73 Massey-Ferguson engine on hand (that needs 2B cleaned but should run) do I try starting it backwards by reverse wrapping the emergency pull cord pulley? Can any engine do this or is there some special feature?

The key switch changes the timing on the engine in forward and reverse.

Any 2 stroke can run backwards. The G1 has two pickups on the crank one advanced for forward rotation and the other for reverse. When you turn the key you select one and 1 of 2 solenoids that turns the starter/gen the proper direction. Both triggers feed into the same ignitor and coil. To put the similar bravo engine in you must adapt the (dual direction) G1 trigger plate to the engine block and its good to go. Many sleds did this in the past, the skidoo will change direction with out stopping the control box actually idles it way down then misfires it to change rotation. The G1 also have ramps in both directions on the secondary clutch.

The G1 motor only has one trigger coil in the magneto. The polarity of the coil gets reversed to make the timing correct for reverse rotation.

Could be I never inspected it that closely, but it does change the timing and nobody seems to be able to make another pulser work that way they use the G1 unit. I'll try to look it up when I have time.
