'89 DS Fuel Pump issue
'89 DS has no fuel flowing from the tank.
Winterized it last autumn and let it run out of gas. Just getting it ready for the season and replaced the 2 fuel filters, some fuel line and clamps. In trying to start it I saw there was no fuel flowing. I primed the feed from the pump to carb and it started right up. Thought all was good until I saw no fuel in the top filter then it ran out of the gas I put in. The pump vent is real clean and the crank connection is solid. I do need to replace the gas cap and seal but they're in a decent condition. Appreciate any input on this! Doug |

Re: '89 DS Fuel Pump issue
If it's getting good vacuum from the crankcase but still not pumping fuel, it does sound like the problem is the pump itself.

Re: '89 DS Fuel Pump issue
You may have some gunk in your fuel pump as Springbok noted. You can take it apart and clean. Just be careful with the diaphragms and screens.
I have taken off the fuel line from the tank, and manually pour some fuel into the pump. Then on the side going to your carb, undo that line and pour fuel into that side. In other words, getting some fuel directly into the pump so that it will prime. (Did this on a Yamaha Rhino and worked great) May not be the way your suppose to do it...but it worked for me. But do check your compression and crank case suction. Crank case should pulse the line going to your pump. Poor compression will cause a no fuel issue. And dumb to say.....but make sure all your lines are connected to your pump correctly (you did say you replaced some fuel lines) |

Re: '89 DS Fuel Pump issue
Thanks for the tips gentlemen.....I'll get to it later today or tomorrow.
I don't own one but can I use a vacuum gauge to check crank case suction, if so what should it read? Can I just use my finger or piece of paper or something for quick check? Thanks, Doug |

Re: '89 DS Fuel Pump issue
I don't know what the actual vacuum measurement should be, I would just do the finger check. I imagine it's not a ton of vacuum. And yeah, if there's vacuum, pop the screws off and see if there's gunk in the pump.

Re: '89 DS Fuel Pump issue
Primed all the lines and it started right up and is running pretty good. There's not much flow out of the tank but running ok. Haven't road tested it yet....we'll see.....
Thanks for your advice! |

I don't think you'll see your filters full of gas. It kinda just trickles out.

Re: '89 DS Fuel Pump issue
Compression should be at about 150-175 psi.
