Proper charging/ Possible bypass Question CC DS
Hello, new to the forum and just acquired a 2006 Club Car DS “AQ” with 4-12 battery setup. The cart came with a Power Drive 3 charger. Batteries are Trojan T-1275 models. The previous owner said he thought something was wrong with the charger not cutting off and mentioned something about a “quick fix” but to not leave it on the charger too long. Upon first inspection and some research from here, it looks as if the charge port grey and black wire are bypassed straight to Neg. Being an ocd/ research oriented person I wanted to figure out the best method to either A. Correct said quick fix. Or B. Invest in a new charger. Or C. Take advice from the abundance of knowledge from this forum. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Proper charging/ Possible bypass Question CC DS
If the OBC is bad the best thing to do is replace the charger and do away with the OBC. My choice would be the DPI Gen IV charger.

Re: Proper charging/ Possible bypass Question CC DS
No clue if the obc is bad but I would guess it had a problem if it’s bypassed. So it sounds like an upgraded charger is the way to go. Anything else I need to do wiring wise when switching to that charger? Grey wire still to Neg. terminal with black off the female charge port?

Re: Proper charging/ Possible bypass Question CC DS
The DPI only uses the black and red wires from the plug. The gray isn't used. They go directly to the batteries. In the future you may want to rewire the charger bypass so you don't drive off with the cart still plugged in.

Re: Proper charging/ Possible bypass Question CC DS
I would venture to guess the OBC failed and has been bypassed. You can the grey and black wires to the OBC to see what happens. Something to make sure of with the OBC is that the main negative cable from the battery pack negative to the controller B- terminal has to go through the hole in the OBC housing. If it does not the OBC can not determine how much energy has been used and will not charge correctly.
If you need controller Lockout during charging to keep the cart from being driven with the charger plugged in, I recommend a Lester Summit II high frequency smart charger. It's top of the line right now and has a very good price tag for the quality and features. And comes with a 4 year warranty. |
