Default Marathon dies at wot

Just bought a 1991 ezgo marathon that has been sitting for a while. Installed brand new batteries and to my surprise it actually runs pretty good. The issue is at wide open throttle it dies.... as long as I keep it about 3/4 throttle it runs great! Any ideas??

Is it a resistor type drive or a controller type drive?

I’m pretty sure it’s a controller type but will check to be certain.

JB knows more about these than me, and I'm sure he'll be back sometime.

I would check and make sure the throttle (if a solid state cart) is not going beyond specs.

Should be a black and a white wire connected to the controller with push-on spade lugs, those are the throttle wires and are connected to a 0-5KΩ potentiometer. (actually, it is more than that, the sweep used is 0-5KΩ)

Disconnect the black and white wire off the controller and measure between the wires with an Ohmmeter. You should get about 0Ω with pedal up and about 5,000Ω with pedal down. Also, when pedal is slowly pushed to floor, the ohms ought to increase smoothly.

If the value goes above about 7,000Ω, the controller will shut down and that may be what is happening.

Between the white and black it ohms 0 with peddle up and it does indeed go above 7000 at WOT. What does this tell me??

Going to 7000Ω and above is why it shuts down at WOT.

Since it is 0Ω at pedal up, it may have the wrong potentiometer installed, or it is dirty.

Try some spray cleaner on the pot and work the pedal up and down numerous times.

May have to replace the pot-box assembly.

I'm not all that familiar with pot-box throttles, maybe someone more knowledgeable will chime in.
