Sounds like high speed jet is clogged, need to remove carb and give it a good cleaning,
If you find trash in carb you will need to clean your gas tank as well.

Stick, if your confident the carbs clean, then its possible the air filter box is sucking air. That causes the motor to run lean.(Hense, needing the choke to run) Check that the filter top has the O-ring gasket in it, and the 4 straps are on. These filters boxes are hard to assemble in the car, till you know what your working with. So I take it out and assemble it on the work bench, making sure all the little groves fit in the little channels.

There is also a chance, that the plastic manifold spacer, between the carb. and head has cracked. Its hard to see until you remove and inspect. In doing so i would replace the 2 gaskets on each side as well.

Good luck Mike

Then once all of that is either replace or checks out and it still does it then it is time to start looking at the crank seals.
Mike stole my thunder I was going to say the exact same thing. These G8 guys are so quick
