Default 90 club car shifting

I have a 1990 club car that won't shift into gear all the time. I got a 16 inch lift on it. Sometimes it goes right in and other times it will grind but goes it after messing around with the shifter. I can go to the rear end and push it into gear either forward or reverse. Would the problem be in the transmission or is it because the shifter cable is not strong enough to push it into gear? What are some fixes for this problem? Thanks guys!

The shift cable has ALOT of adjustment, I would start there.

My shifter cable was stiff last year and not shifting easily. I took it out, hung it vertically in my garage and sprayed PB Blaster down into it from the top and let it soak down through the cable overnight. Did the trick.

16" lift? I think we're going to need to see a picture of that.

I don't know how to post pics. Yes 16" lift with 30" tires. The cable is loose. I tried to adjust the cable and it still won't **** right. I can go to the rear end and slap it into gear. It's like the shifter lever isn't strong enough to put it into gear. Any other opinions?
