Looks like the armature coming off the motor into the gear box. This is where all the noise is coming from. Should I remove the motor or start from the bottom up with the gears?

First go ahead and remove the motor, remember to label the cables as to where they belong.

Since your cart is in the neighborhood of 21 years old.....and I bet the differential cover has most likely never been off. all I would do is get a big pan to put below it, and buy some cleaner/degreaser and spray it all over the gears to remove all or any gunk in the case......make sure you spin the gears to clean them all. the easiest way to do that is to put the cart up on jack stands.

once you get the motor out.....you will be able to spin the gears by spinning the wheels. I would be willing to bet the noise is gone. The differential needs 10 oz. of good gear oil, even though the stock manual says 30 wt motor oil, most of us all put good gear oil in.

then get your motor either rebuilt, or buy an aftermarket motor that meets your needs.

with that in mind, and to keep the cost down.....I would look in your area for a cart business that might have a used motor. seeing as a new motor is going to blow your budget as a new motor even a stock one will run somewhere around $500
