The average start battery loses 1% of its capacity every time it deep cycles
Can you cite a reference for that number.

In my experience they lose more than that. Start batteries are very different than deep cycle batteries.

Probably true - but by definition, deep cycle means (nearly) flat - which is punishing for that type of battery. If his cart drives only 500 yards per day (like the amount used starting a cold diesel), the negative impact may be negligible.

Personally I wouldn't waste the money trying them. They will certainly die an early death because the battery technology in those is totally unsuited to installation in a golf cart. Although its anyone's guess as to how quickly they will fail.

I've got a 2012 GEM e4 and the OEM batteries were Group-31 gel batteries (8G31). I just dropped $1700 on a new set that I plan to install over July 4th weekend. (The GEM is 72V so there are 6 batteries.) The OEM batteries were in a fully discharged state for many months before I bought the cart so I'm assuming that the batteries only lasted 4 years because they had been abused. I'm hoping for more longevity out of the new ones.

I am using some 12v C&D Technologies 140Ah deep cycle AGM batteries made for battery backup in telecom applications. Have only been using them for a year in my Marathon, but they are working great. Range is ~10-12 miles per charge- discharged to 50% SOC. Not the same batteries as yours, but another data point for 12v batteries.

The telecom backup batteries can be had for cheap as they are commonly required to proactively replace them after 1-3 yrs.

That's not a lot of range.

Maybe not, but it suits the application for me, and was offered to the OP as a data point.
