So here's what I'm thinking....
I want to run some better (than the stock ones) lights, but I don't want them to pull off the 6v's, so I'm thinking of putting a 12v car battery (have a brand new one laying around for some reason) in the side tray under the seat. To keep it charged, I'm thinking about a small solar panel on the roof and running the wiring inside the posts & down to the battery. I figure a charge controller could sit right next to the battery. Of course, all of it would be wired independently. Maybe I could even run an mp3/small amp/speaker setup off it?
I've done just about everything else I wanted to do it and I'm getting itchy... hahah |

Re: So here's what I'm thinking....
You may also want to search on RV or boat forums. I have a friend who used a "small" solar panel, around 12" x 16" or so, to keep his boat battery charged. You'd have to look at the maximum drain on your battery vs. time in the sun, and calculate the amperage output needed on a daily or weekly basis.
If you have an on-board digital volt meter, you could hook up a switch to toggle between your buggy pack and accessory battery. Crash, How well does your solar work? Does it need regular charging or does the solar panel(s) keep it topped off? Based on my driving, parking, and storage habits, I don't think solar would help me. As to running the wires down the posts, I think my roof struts have more copper in them than iron. I have a dome light, rear LED red light, Xenon strobe wig-wags, siren, power/temp/speed-o cables for my Alltrax Exray, stereo power and memory wires, and aux input to stereo. I used a 12 AWG wire to fish a nylon pull string. Then I pulled in the wires. It was a pain, and you have to decide how you enter and exit the struts. Once you have the wires through the struts, tie a nut to the pull string and use a strong magnet to pull it where you need inside the roof. |
