Default winter battery maint. question

Would I be better off to take the batteries out of the cart and use a 8v trickle charger or leave the pack in the cart and use the 48v DPI charger? The winters aren't that bad here and only really cold for about 2 months but I don't want to ruin a new set of 8v batteries this winter. If I use the DPI how long should I keep it plugged into the cart at a time?

Leave them in the cart and leave the DPI connected 100% of the time. Water and clean monthly if possible.
The DPI float charges at a voltage below the point where major gassing occurs, but a slight amount of gassing still occurs and they need to be checked periodically.
I had a 36V and a 42V pack on DPI chargers last winter and I used about a quart of water total in the 13 6V batteries.

FWIW: A fully charged battery won't freeze as long as the temperature stays above -93°F.
