FWIW, I never got around to installing a real heat sink on my AXE4855. I do have it mounted to a large aluminum plate, but no fins.

I believe they have built in thermal protection? Even if they don't you can drive around with a laptop and monitor temp on some of your more challenging hills with a passenger or three.

I have a really big heat sink that I harvested from a 7.5 Hp VFD, but don't have enough motor clearance to install. Been driving it for a couple of years with moderate hills, two extra batteries, a rear seat, and up to four riders.

It will help it to run cooler. I would take some measurements and then visit your local salvage yard. You can probably find one that will fit without much alteration. As for size, whatever you get to fit will help!
Perfect use for a junk delta Q charger! They have a decent heat sink! :)

Since you can always add one later, I'd try the drive and datalog.

Hook it up and look for something called "monitoring" or similar. If it's an AXE, you will either need to never remove your foot from the pedal, or temporarily jump a solid power to the controller. Series controllers turn off with pedal up, and communication is lost to the laptop.

Alltrax software is available from their website.

Thanks, one more thing, can you get some type of temp sensor/gauge for the motor?

Alltrax Exray for real-time. A hand-held IR thermometer should work just as well, and will have many other uses, like where heat is escaping from your house.
