You have State sales tax, I know because every time I'm in the US I get caught out with an item costing more at the register than the price on the shelf. We removed individual sales taxes and now charge a flat 10% on most items (some things are exempt). Our shelf price includes the GST so you pay what is shown on the ticket. Obviously if you buy on-line from overseas the price doesn't include the GST so it has to be added on. It's really six-of-one and half-a-dozen-of-the-other as they say.

Not what I'm asking. For example, if you take your car to a service center and the bill is $300 plus tax. $100 for parts and $200 for labor, we don't pay tax on the labor. Only on the parts.

No, we pay on both.

Got it. I thought that was the "Services" part.

Depends on what state you live in. We pay taxes on parts and service in ky.

Sounds kinda familiar (my user-namesake)
Do you also have income tax to deal with there?

Yes. The rate varies depending on your income. Once you pass certain thresholds the rate increases.

I don't care any more because as a pensioner I don't reach the first threshold so I don't pay any income tax. Mind you I am ex-military and I worked for 51 years, paying tax all that time. I don't feel embarrassed now to be having an easier time of it.

I think Yawood is talking about a "National" tax. What we would call a "Federal" tax.
