speed controller replacement
Need advise from the brain trust!
I have a 2001 TXT series cart that was converted to 48v. 6 trojan 8v t875's and an Axe 500 amp speed controller. Batteries are 7 years old but haven't started giving me problems but now the speed controller is going out. The cart is lifted with 22" tires and a heavy back seat and is used on gently rolling hills/ sometimes rocky terrain. I was thinking of moving down to the 400amp controller to save some money. The motor is stock. 1. Can I re-use the solenoid assembly from my 500 amp axe controller on a new 400 or 500 amp controller? It's an mzj 200 d48-48a. 2. Will I regret dropping down to a 400 amp controller or will I even notice? thanks in advance |

Re: speed controller replacement
The new Alltrax SR generation controller have a higher peak and sustained out put than the AXE controllers. So much higher that Alltrax recommends a 500 amp AXE control can be replaced with a 400 amp SR without any loss in performance. Peak output on the 400 is 460 amps.
I think you will give up 5-10% peak performance which may not be noticeable. I have the 300 amp SR on an industrial cart with a 10 hp high torque motor that is running just fine. |

Re: speed controller replacement
FWIW:
With 22" tires, a heavy back seat and gentle hills, the optional fan kit might be needed for the SR48400 and the SR48500 comes with a fan, so the cost savings is only $25 at current sale prices. As for performance, since you are running at 48V, you're not unlikely to notice any difference between a SR48400 and a SR48500. |

Re: speed controller replacement
Thanks for the info. Thought it over and I’m hardly ever full throttle, and don’t use the cart much in the heat of summer so I’m saving closer to 70 by going with the 400a.if I have to add a fan down the road I’ll just do that.

Re: speed controller replacement
Partial throttle tends to generate more heat in a controller and motor than full throttle does. Motor efficiency is typically higher at higher RPMs.
