Default Schauer Charger issue

The model I have has the auto shut off mode but when I plugged it in the other night it was still running 8 hrs later which it's never done. Barely drove it the day before so batteries weren't that low.
Can the auto shut off mode go bad?
Thanks

So this may not directly apply to you but my Schumacher unit has stumped me twice with this. What was happening was the fan was coming on but not actually charging and I have no idea why. First time it happened was at Ft. Wilderness, got up in the morning and heard the charger going which I thought may have been because we used it so much the day before but when I hopped in the voltage read exactly what it did the day before, so I turned it off and waited a minute to turn back on and everything worked as expected. It happened once this summer as well when I got up for work I heard the charger going and same thing fan was running but the batteries dint get charged. Now when I plug it in I wait for a second to make sure the voltage is going up before I walk away. My only word of advice is to verify that it was actually charging while it was running.

Spoke with a tech person at Schauer today, really nice guy, said it sounds more like a battery issue, charger is less than 2yrs old. He said there is a 17 hr auto shut off and suggested charging for that long to see if it shuts off. If the batteries are going bad, they are a few yrs old, will charging that long hurt them more?
