Re: engine differences ?
the cc's are the same, as are the pistons. maybe g/s. every thing else is different.

Re: engine differences ?
In mid-year 1989, (early '89 models had the 2pg engine) E-Z-GO changed to the '3pg' engine, leaving the old 2pg to history. The '3pg' engine has the spark plug turned upward, and the whole engine is rotated such that both clutches face the driver side of the golf cart. This rotation allowed for the differential to be changed from a hypoid gearing to a more efficient helical gear design, a change that persists to this day. The lay-down style golf cart muffler for the '3pg' engine is in front of, and slightly above the engine. The piston is about the only part that works in either engine. The crankshaft & clutches, the exhaust system, the carburetor, air intake & control cables all changed. The carburetor changed from the BV18 to a BV24. The change in carburation and the exhaust system resulted in the output changing from 9 hp to 11 hp although the recommended maximum rpms remained at 5000. The weight remained within a few pounds the same. In case you were wondering, you cannot simply drop in a 3PG engine into a pre 89 cart unless you have the complete rear end.

Re: engine differences ?
Dave Box,
I read somewhere the reason for the max rpm of 5000 was due to piston ring locator pin would come loose at higher r's. Is this valid? Or another area of weakness? Bill |

Re: engine differences ?
Bill,
I really don't know but it sounds plausible. I just quoted from the manual. I fitted a rev counter to mine as I decided to dispense with the governor. With 22 inch tires the little engine maxs out at about 4200 rpm but by then I am doing ~ 22mph which is quite fast enough for the brake design which could be fairly described as optimistic. Dave |

Re: engine differences ?
thanks again Dave,
I used to build racing M/C's years ago and have been studying the possible use of M/C piston use and some port changes along with carb and exhaust upgrades. May not be worth doing. Thanks again Bill |

Re: engine differences ?
Still looking at M/C piston and cyl use for higher rpm and weight reduction also alows for expansion chamber-Say 6000-7000 rpm WOT.
Possible output of 14-18 HP Does anyone know if the crank will take this increase in rpm? Bill |

Re: engine differences ?
Seems the 3pg was a 2hp gain due to piston, cyl.,carb and exhaust changes.
The 2pg is supposed to make about 12 hp @5000 rpm. So, if one could run a 3pg top end with better exhaust and carburation, should be able to get 14-16 hp for short periods @5000 rpm Will the reed plate from a 2pg fit the 3pg cyl? Will the head from a 2pg fit the 3pg.? From previous posts, the piston and cyl from 3pg will fit 2pg. what do you think gentlemen? |
