If it cranks alot, then finally fires, but sputters briefly,it sounds like the pump is draining-back.You can get a rebuild-kit for the pump for around $15.Most Mower-Shops should be able to get it,If not, check dirt-bike/quad dealers or shops. Its' a very common pump. Also replace the fuel-lines from tank to pump, pump to carb.and a new filter. This guarantees no restrictions or air-leaks(suction)Use the good pliable fuel-line like they use on sleds, its' about $6/ft and worth it.It doesn't require clamps and stays soft, but seals like its' welded on!Also, check the pick-up in the tank, mine had a problem that it was cracked, and when the fuel got down to a certain level it would run awful, added some fuel and it was fine.Hope this helps.

When you say the clutch slipping,Do you mean the starter-belt was slipping on it,and the engine won't turn over?If so,either adjust the starter-belt tension,or replace the belt.If its' sitting down inside the starter pulley,or the pulley on the clutch, its' worn and won't grab properly.Hope this helps.
