Charging 48 with 12?
I was asked to check on the status of my employer's golf cart. Our company has a 1995 48 volt DS. I noticed that although it has new Trojan batteries, the cart is being charged by an automotive style charger in 12 volt mode. Is this a no-no for a 48 volt system? My cart is gas and I know very little about sparkies, but this does not sound correct. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
BTW, the charger has standard large alligator clips that can only be placed on one battery at a time. |

I bet they are charging each battery individually with the 12v charger, which is not good. They need to get a 48 volt charger with the correct plug for the cart, so the pack will charge evenly. |

Re: Charging 48 with 12?
If this cart is used everyday, there is no way a 12V charger will be able to properly charge all the batteries! Have your boss do himself a favor and get the proper charger or he'll be buying batteries again! " ScottyB " has really nice chargers! It would pay you to take a look!

Re: Charging 48 with 12?
Thanks for the replies. I will recommend that all charging cease. I dont want to risk swelling the new batteries or worse, having them leak acid or explode.
Thanks for the immediate help. |

Re: Charging 48 with 12?
Leaving them in a state of discharge will do permenant damage also. There really is no option, get the proper charger of course, but get a technician or knowledgeable person to start charging the batteries to an acceptable level.
