Default Charging 48 with 12?

I was asked to check on the status of my employer's golf cart. Our company has a 1995 48 volt DS. I noticed that although it has new Trojan batteries, the cart is being charged by an automotive style charger in 12 volt mode. Is this a no-no for a 48 volt system? My cart is gas and I know very little about sparkies, but this does not sound correct. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

BTW, the charger has standard large alligator clips that can only be placed on one battery at a time.
