Default Full throttle only no speed control

Problem 1986 EZGO Textron seems to only want to go fast all the time. On the serious side it seems I can only get the cart to run at full speed any other throttle position produces no movement. All help and suggestions are welcome.

Until the EZ GO guys can get in here to help you, I would look at the resistor board assembly and see if everything is making contact. i don't know a lot about these carts.

Hope this helps.

Is there any way you can post a wiring diagram to your cart? You are missing your low / mid speeds which can be a couple of different points depending on diagram. Bad solenoid(s) are always suspect.

It could be a possible issue with the resistor coils themselves. Here is a copy of a 85' Marathon that should be close.

Check the resistor coils. Symptoms indicate #3 coil is open.

Spot on number three is open, fried at the terminal. Just have to get the part ordered now. I was thinking a new board and new #3 resistor coil or would you suggest the entire resistor assembly?

Yep! All that melted metal would be your issue!

You can just replace that one resistor for sure but you still have some work to do. Your original resistor melted for a reason so you should try to determine why so that your new one doesn't melt.

Far and away the biggest reason why a resistor would melt is a poor electrical connection somewhere. IE, current can't efficiently move through your circuit so it dissipates somewhere as heat......a melted resistor. Go through your entire circuit (it doesn't take long on those carts) and make sure all connections are shiny clean. Personally, I coat everything all connections with dielectric grease as well.

This might be a good time to update to an electronic speed controller.

So I got the part I ordered however it was the wrong part of course. I have a couple of pictures here of the coils. The one that is fried is the thin coil on the end not the thickest coil on the other end. I ordered the third speed coil but now I am thinking it may be the first gear coil. I’m just slightly confused on which is which. Let me just post these pics and see what you think.

The parts manual identifies them as heavy, medium and light, but there are two different part numbers for each depending on the cart's serial number.

See pages 58, 59, 59A and 59B is attached parts manual for a 84-86 X-444 (Marathon body with 4 wheels)
