Calculate speed of a golf cart
I'm trying to figure out the speed possible with my Shuttle 6 cart, and ran into the following equation online:
RPM’s of motor X Tire Radius (in inches) / Gear Ratio X 168 = Miles per Hour I know the gear ratio of the cart is 14.7:1 The tires are 8" Does anyone know the RPM of a 73291G04 ezgo motor? |

Re: Calculate speed of a golf cart
The motor's rpm is listed on the spec plate affixed to motor can.

Re: Calculate speed of a golf cart
Normally it is on the plate, except when you're dealing with EZGO who want to keep everything secret.
Papajohn - I can only use GPS once you install everything on the cart. I'm trying to run numbers before I do the upgrade to figure out which way to go. |

Re: Calculate speed of a golf cart
Well, if your motor is a GE 2.5 hp or a D&D 8 hp, I can post the specs for those.

Re: Calculate speed of a golf cart
73291G04 is a 48V PDS motor and I've got a 36V PDS motor (73445G02), but it will spin at about 4,400 RPM.
(17.4" tire diameter and 12.44:1 gears @ 18.2 MPH on level ground.) Without the RPM being limited by the controller, the 36V PDS motor will spin in the 5.5-6.0K range. (If you can feed it the Watts it needs. ) Perhaps a dumb question, but if the cart is currently running, why not measure existing speed and calculate current RPM? Then you can plug in the projected gains for the future upgrades into the equation for a ballpark figure of the end result. |

Re: Calculate speed of a golf cart
The cart is running, but it's hard to figure out if the controller is limiting the motor and/or the battery pack is. The batteries are not new and are probably not pushing the optimal amount of power. Your information does help a lot. Thank you.

Re: Calculate speed of a golf cart
Jack the rear wheels off ground and put on jackstands.
It doesn't take very much current to just spin the tires, wheels and brake drums, so you'll probably be able to hear if controller is limiting RPM even with sick batteries. When I floor mine quickly, it surges a few times and then settles down to a steady whine. (My 1206MX controller has an up ramp on acceleration, so it doesn't reach max instantly.) When I press throttle slowly, it stops getting faster (sound wise) at about a quarter to third of the way down and no change in sound from there on to the floor. Surprisingly, my rear wheels, tires and brake drums are well balanced. |
