Battery fill cover vents
I know the major battery manufacturers recommend rinsing of the tops of the batteries from time to time with a mixture of baking soda and water. My question is what keeps this out of the battery? Is there some kind of valve in the vents or do you have to be real careful not to spray the water near the vents? just curious.

The caps have a flexible mechanical seal, and the vent hole leads to a permeable insert that will let gas escape/equalize while keeping water drops out. You would need to try real hard to get anything in there, assuming they were in good shape and on tightly.
