Default Exploding batteries

Neighbor has a 2009 Ezgo PDS 36 volts. Stock everything including tires. He has had a couple of batteries explode. He says he is just riding down the street and he hears a loud “BOOM”. The cart stops, he looks under the seat and one of the battery posts has just melted down. He replaced the battery and another does it. He says this has happened 3 times and one of the times it was a new battery he just installed. Where do we start? I am doing a complete upgrade to 48 volts onmine so we have every extra part needed. Could this just be the batteries? The controller? The motor? He is a retired man and he and his wife like to take their dogs fora ride but they are afraid to drive it with the batteries exploding.

All it takes is a loose battery connection. The sparks will ignite the hydrogen gas from the batteries. It makes quite a boom under your butt when it happens. I won't say how I know, but I regularly check my batteries to make sure the connections are secure.

Replace battery cable before installing new battery. ( I had the same issue).

Replace any damaged cables. Scrub all posts and nuts to remove oxidation. Torque appropriately (10 ft-lbs I believe). Spray with battery terminal protector. Make sure water levels are filled correctly.

Indeed he could have corrosion inside of the cables causing resistance and heat build up.

But if the battery pack has age and he is just replacing the one that goes boom he is not doing himself any favors. All battery in an aging pact need inspection and likely replacing as no matter how new that battery the pack is no better than the worst battery...
