Only way to tell for sure is to remove the rear drums and inspect the shoes. Other than removing the castle nuts, the brakes themselves are easy to work on.

When pulling the rear drums, once the wheel is off will the drum itself just slide off the studs like the drums on a pre disk brake car.
Why would I want to remove the Castle nuts other then to clean and re-grease the wheel bearings, also is there a dust cap over that castle nut?? My boat trailer has a dust cover with a grease fitting in it called a bearing buddy.
Is there a drawing available I can see before I pull that wheel off so I know what to expect.

Download the Owner, the Service and the parts manuals for your cart here: https://www.buggiesgonewild.com/showthread.php?t=1536
They are the top three PDF files.

Your cart's brake drum is spline coupled to the axle and is held on with the castle nut. The studs that the wheels are bolted on to are part of the brake drum.

Had similar braking problems with my txt when I first bought it.
There is an adjustment procedure listed in the manual.
Recommend following every adjustment in the order they are recommended in the repair section.
This includes the equalizer bar and. Cables, star wheel adjusters
Use never seize on adjuster threads when reassembling.
Inspect and replace any parts, like frozen or stiff cables.
The brakes must be treated as a system and adjusted as such.

Good news they are mechanical, very similar to an older automobile.
Be sure to recurve castle/axle nut to spec when done.
Frozen or stuck brake cables are many times the cause of the problem.😊

I think I understand that just to inspect the brake shoes I must remove that castle nut after I remove the wheel and tire.

Yep.

Here's a page from the parts manual I directed you to above.

After reading the service and repair manual, I think my problem is just rust on the brake drum and they even had a procedure for dealing with that.
Thanks for the manuals, they helped a lot

I followed the instructions in the technicians repair manual by driving at full power and applying moderate brakes at the same time. After 3 or 4 times later the brakes are now working much better without grabbing at very low speeds causing the wheels to lockup and skid.

lots of good info in that manual, thanks for the link.

For those who aren't aware of how the self-adjusters on EZGO brakes work:

While driving FORWARD at moderate speed, push on brake pedal as hard as you can, being careful not to set parking brake, and release pedal just before the cart stops rolling. Repeat process until brakes will lock up the rear tires.
