Ahhh...ok. I know the 2001-2002 has the bumper, the 92-96 has the guide ring.

Exactly... only the newer style motors with solid steel shafts have the bumper in them.

So it looks like I'll need a guide ring instead of the bumper for my 97. My bad, this should be a sticky. I fixed the original post.

UPDATE. I removed the motor. Lots of brown dust and some black dust. Blew it all out and replaced the guide ring. I didn't think it was going to fix the problem because the old one appeared to be OK. But after putting it all back together the sound is gone and cart is running fine. Smashed my finger pretty good in the process and know how to remove the body now too. Gotta save up for that upgraded motor. Thanks for the help.

Also - I may start a new post, but what kind of maintenance does the gear box require? What goes in that little screw hole on top??

I have always wondered what that little screw on top is for also... is it a vent for the trans? I know this is an old post, but I was researching the guide ring replacement/spring centering device myself and stumbled onto this thread.
