The abietic acid does not attack the copper metal under any condition. This abietate formation is peculiar to copper surfaces since the only common abietate salt is of copper.

I see lots of corroded cables spray coated with protectant and corrosion growing on the bottom. Take those cables to a wire wheel and coat them with a battery protectant or vasaline or dielectric grease before they are put on and after they are snugged down.

First clean your posts with a wire wheel on your battery drill. Then coat and add cable, then coat and add nut, then tighten and finish coat. This should minimize the exposure to corrosive gasses during charging.

The attached is from Kester, a major solder manufacturer.

FWIW: I've used Vaseline on all the terminals (screw-on & push-on) I've taken apart and put back together on my cart.
It acts as a fairly decent anti-seize as well as being pretty good at preventing corrosion.
There's probably better stuff for both, but it works well enough for me, it's inexpensive and relatively non-toxic.

Like Scotty said, clean the terminals and lugs, coat everything before assembling and coat afterwards.

After routine battery maintenance, I use an acid brush to re-coat the undersides on the lugs as well as "painting" their topsides.

Side-note:
Vaseline is also a great lubricant for long term use in light weight, low speed, low friction applications such as door locks, clockwork mechanisms in music boxes and similar situations where traditional lubricants dry out and gum-up the works after a few years. I've used it on the gears and levers in optical equipment for years, and I used in in an antique wind-up phonograph thirty odd years ago that still works today. It's no good for high-temperatures, high speeds or heavy loading, but it's great for some things.

Thanks John. That is what I plan to go do, oh in about 30 minutes. I am just going to remove all of them, clean them really really good, cables and terminals, and rape them with vaseline

That sounds totally wrong, in every way

Well have done a little cleaning so far. Wow. What a difference. I think I have finally done it right whether these batteries are bad or not. It's for sure going to help. Pictures will be up momentarily.

Colt,
in your first photo, is that a crack going across your post where the date code is? That doesn't look good to me. Also is that the terminal that got hot?
Yeah, you can see stuff in a photo, for sure!
