Rear End Question

Another reason to pull the motor and axle as a unit, is that I can spin it up on the bench and use my listening stick to pinpoint all noises. Based on recent posts, it sound like replacing all seals would be a good idea, as well as the wheel bearings. Being a 1998, it's got a few miles on it. Wish it had the Ex-Ray originally, then I would know exactly how many miles, but it was enough to seriously wear the rack and pinion.

While dropping the rear-end I had a kewl visitor, though not quite as spastic as my neighbors friend, given the temperature and his cold blooded nature.

Dropping it was a piece of cake. I just used a 2" nylon strap and lowered it with a floor jack, while keeping a little tension on the straps.

My thoughts are to support it upside down, and slowly spin it up with th epan removed, while hitting each bearing with my listening stick. I'm planning on replacing the wheel bearings and all seals and o-rings.

It's always been noisier than I liked while free-wheeling downhill, but is is over 14 years old! Maybe I can do the used car trick and fill it with sawdust!

I'd just replace all the bearings if you have it out anyway. I'm sure there is a local bearing supply in your area. Just take the bearings to them and match them up. You will need to get the intermediate shaft plugs from EZGO.

Not a bad idea. I know at work, if we tear apart a large piece equipment, we check run-time, and assess whether if it makes sense to replace each and every wear part.

Does anyone have a feel for what golf courses do? Maybe they don't keep a buggy long enough to even have any data, but my rear-end has 12 years of maybe seasonal use, and two years of year round use. Does anyone have any data - even circimstantial- of how long a bearing in an oil bath lasts?

I don't think the axle bearings run in oil, as I believe the seals are in between the bearings and the oil. The bearings are probably the sealed/shielded type. I would get a price on new bearings and if not a lot of $$$, just replace them. Also, keep in mind that it will be harder to detect noisy bearings when they are unloaded (as they are right now). All the bearings were about $80 if I remember correctly. I'd change them all if it were me.
