The cable was crimped and it was on the solenoid side. Could that be my problem for the cart moving slow uphill as well?

Dunno, but if you got something hot enough to catch fire, you were definitely wasting power, which could have gone to the motor.

OP hasn't stated but I sense we are talking about stock components under slow uphill operation? Slow uphill operation increases amperage draw, The solenoid could be the point of the most resistance to the increased flow which would cause heat. Or it could have just been the cable itself ? We can't know because we haven't seen the cables or the components. Resistance causes heat.
Resistance can be created from too high of a draw = reduce draw. Or too small of a supply system = increase supply

Everything is stock accept cables cables are all brand new 4 gauge everything was nice and tight as well

I melted two stock solenoids before upgrading to a more robust ScottyB one. That's the only thing that failed on mine while stock. I wasn't going slow, but was carrying three passengers and driving pretty continuously.

I guess ill try replacing the solenoid with a bigger one and see what happens
