I just made a post on the ezgo side about the same problem.
A friend of mine has an old ezgo where over time two cables on the controller rubbed and shorted out. It blew the bottom off the controller and smoked a lot.
I had a extra controller so I put that in the cart. replaced a few worn battery cables. all is good. and it didnt cost him a penny. I guess it saves to keep a few old parts.
